A care home resident said she felt “so valued” when she received dozens of cards celebrating her 100th birthday.

Vera Radford received about 75 cards ahead of her birthday on April 27.

Staff at Saltshouse Haven Nursing Home in Hull appealed to people on social media and BBC Radio Humberside to send their best wishes to Vera.

The nursing home described her as “a social person who likes to talk well”.

Vera was a firefighter during World War II. She later became a nursery nurse and worked in a bakery.

She had one son and was married to her husband of 50 years before his death.

Sophie Wilson, unit manager at Preston House, Saltshouse Haven Care Home, said Vera loved arts and crafts.

“Vera is a sociable person and likes to have good conversations with residents about what she has done in the past,” she added.

'Quite emotional'

Vera said: “It's appreciated and it doesn't go unnoticed. I'll never know how to repay everyone for everything they do.

“I felt very valued and loved.”

Ms Wilson said: “It's very exciting because reaching 100 is an achievement. We rarely see people reach this age.”

“It’s very special for people in nursing homes.”

Vera's son, Mike, said he wished his mother a “happy 100th birthday.”

To celebrate her birthday, the nursing home has booked a singer to sing 60s songs on April 24.

They also purchased a “100” tiara fit for a queen for her April 27 party.

Both Vera and Saltshouse Haven Care Home would like to thank everyone involved in making her 100th birthday so special.

Vera will receive a special letter from King Charles III to mark her 100th birthday.
