The study used U.S. search volume data from Google Trends to determine the top store credit cards by state. The initial analysis included data from more than 20 retailers offering store credit cards, then narrowed it down to the six most popular national retailers based on relevant store search volume – Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe's, Target, Walmart and Costco brands.

To determine the top store cards in each state, Upgraded Points compared Google search volume for the trailing 12 months ending on March 20, 2024. The combination determines relative popularity. The store cards with the highest search traffic in each state are considered the most popular. Additionally, the researchers conducted a relative breakdown of store card-related web searches for each of the six brands.
