Must win, wild card

When the 2024 Tony Award nominations are announced tomorrow morning, it's likely to be a tight race. With so many shows playing during the onslaught of the past two weeks, nominees may still be clearing their minds and perhaps taking a moment to eat and breathe as they ruminate on the 36 shows that will open on Broadway through April 28 Works, 2023 and April 25, 2024.

Some nominations are deserved: critically acclaimed and popular We roll forward happily It's a sure choice for all involved, but what about more polarizing fare? Cabaret, There Is Love, Water for ElephantsI'm watching you.

Selected categories will be broadcast live cbs morning show 8:30 a.m. ET, with the full announcement broadcast live on the official Tony Awards YouTube page at 9 a.m. ET.

Here are my predictions and thoughts on the shows vying for the Tony Awards on June 16, as well as some shows I hope to see. (See the complete list of eligible 2023-2024 Broadway productions at the bottom of this article.)

best musical

The brilliance of Sheena Taub SavesThe Joy of Alicia Keys hell's kitchen and an exciting Sufjan Stevens-Josh Peck dance music remix collaboration Illinois is – or should be – a sure bet.I'm not really sure about the last two positions, but I'd go with A day of wine and roses, an endearing, understated and harrowing story about alcoholism in Mad Men-era New York. And at the same time Lempicka This work is an uneven portrait of 20th-century artist Tamara Lempicka, and sadly has enough moments to join the fray.

Wild card: “The Outsider”, “Water for Elephants”, “The Notebook”, harmonious

best play

stereoDavid Adjemi's brilliant deconstruction of rock bands, fading music scenes, dying love, and a generation enjoying (or not) one last laugh may have had their backstage nomination passes laminated and taped to their lanyards.Joshua Harmon Pray for the French Republic, is a deeply touching and strangely relevant family drama about the Holocaust and its eternal lessons. I can't imagine two unlikely contenders for the same award, or two more equally deserving shows. Other possible nominees: Jaja’s African Braids, Mary Jane, and Mom plays.

Wild card: patriots

Best Musical Revival

An easy category to choose: We roll forward happily is the top choice (and likely Tony winner), followed by who is tommy, So-so received but hyped Cabaret show at Kit Kat Clubfan favorite Gutenberg! and nostalgic wizard Everyone lined up for the shot.Six months ago I would have said Spamalot by Monty Python It is a lock, but the box office was dismal, which made me lament the state of a young man who does not worship the altar of Python.

best revival game

suitable and Puli victory As close to a sure thing as a nomination gets, star power should work its magic on shows that don't receive universal acclaim (enemy of the people Jeremy Strong and Michael Imperioli; Uncle Vanya Starring Steve Carell and Alfred Molina; and Suspect Starring Liev Schreiber and Amy Ryan.

Lead Actor (Musical)

Jonathan Grove (We roll forward happily) and Brian d'Arcy James (A day of wine and roses) is the lock, as is Eddie Redmayne (Cabaret show at Kit Kat Club).I would like to add Andrew Rannells (Gutenberg!) and Ali Louis Burzgui (Tommy),besides.I'm not a big fan of Redmayne's nervous performance, but would be equally satisfied kathy likes (back to the Future) or Grant Gustin (water for elephants).

Lead Actor (Drama)

Leslie Odom Jr. (Puli victory) is a sure thing, and Jeremy Strong (enemy of the people), Steve Carell (Uncle Vanya), Levi Schreiber (Suspect) and Michael Stuhlbarg (patriots) may advance. My preference is william jackson harper (Uncle Vanya) more than anyone except Odom.

Lead Actress (Musical)

Kelly O'Hara is sublime A day of wine and rosesand Maria Joy Moon made an unforgettable broadway debut hell's kitchen. Sheena Taub is a pleasure Savesgentleness and tenacity take turns. Gail Rankin Likely to be nominated for her controversial role as Sally Bowles in “Sally Bowles” singing and dancingEden Espinosa in Lempicka.

Wild card: Eva Noblezada was the highlight of a match that went astray the great gatsby, But I'm afraid she's swimming against the current this time.

Wild card: Tatiana Maslany and Laurie Metcalf (gray house)

Featured Character Actor (Musical)

Daniel Radcliffe is a lock hapinessand Steven Skybell, Herr Schultz, the Jewish businessman, gives the most endearing performance. singing and dancing. Brandon Victor Dixonin a limited stage time hell's kitchenmemorable, and Michael Urie is the funniest performer in a very interesting show spam.I also predict Paul Alexander Nolan for water for elephantsbut I would rather see Ben Cook Seize the opportunity for him to turn around in pain Illinois.

Actors playing featured roles (drama)

Corey Stoll (suitable), Michael Imperioli (enemy of the people) and Eli Gelb (stereo) seems likely, although I doubt Will Keenewho plays Putin in the play patriotsand Alfred Molina (Uncle Vanya) would be nominated, I'd rather see Will Brill and Tom Pecinka, both of them stereoin those slots.
