Nvidia just replaced the GPUs in some RTX 4070 graphics cards

Nvidia is apparently allowing graphics card manufacturers to build GeForce RTX 4070 cards using the same GPUs typically used for its more powerful graphics cards.Specifically, instead of using the AD104 chip used in standard cards, Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 It has been found to be made from the AD103 GPU commonly seen in the RTX 4080.

The specific variant of what is arguably the best graphics card in Nvidia's original 4000 series lineup is the MSI RTX 4070 Ventus 3X E 12 GB OC. The card doesn't look any different from the outside, and it doesn't perform any differently than the standard RTX 4070, but it's one of the larger RTX 4070 variants on the market.

The discovery was made by TechPowerUp, thanks to a reader who submitted a screenshot showing that GPU-Z was unable to recognize this particular card. GPU-Z is the graphics card information software widely used by TechPowerUp. After analyzing the data submitted by the application, the website found that it was marked as using an AD103 chip instead of the expected AD104.

Ultimately, this isn't a particularly shocking finding, as chipmakers have long used larger wafers to produce lower-end products. By disabling certain parts of the die, it is possible to provide the same effective performance as using only a smaller die.

Why do they do this? Well, when wafers are manufactured, they often have tiny defects that mean the entire wafer won't function. However, by disabling defective areas, the chip can still be used, just with less processing power.

Interestingly, the AD103 has a larger GPU than the AD104, as shown in the image below (courtesy of TechPowerUp). So you'd expect clear signs of this larger GPU on the card. However, so far, there has been no follow-up to determine whether the cards themselves caught these differences.

What we do know is that there are no reported performance differences compared to the regular RTX 4070. part. This is not an easy task and will probably destroy the graphics card, but it has been done on other GPUs in the past, usually by flashing it with a different graphics card's BIOS, thus unlocking the extra performance for free. .

However, for those who are not willing to spend $600 on a graphics card, we recommend purchasing the RTX 4070 Super. It's a slightly more expensive option, but it offers significant upgrades over non-Super cards, making it our pick for the best mid-range graphics card.
