18-year-old pizza delivery driver shot seven times after mix-up in driveway

ASHLAND CITY, Tenn. (WTVF) – An 18-year-old pizza delivery driver in Tennessee was shot multiple times after accidentally parking in the wrong driveway while on duty.

Kayden Wheeler, an 18-year-old high school student, is still coming to terms with what happened to him Monday night in Ashland. The Domino's Pizza employee was shot seven times during his first and only delivery of the night after parking in the wrong driveway.

“I can tell you that nothing that I expected happened with the delivery,” Wheeler said. “In my opinion, this is attempted murder because they literally almost killed me on the spot.”

On North Poole Street, a quiet residential street, most homes are just a few feet from each other. Wheeler accidentally parked in 114B instead of 118 next door. He placed the pizza in its correct home and returned to the truck.

Police say 32-year-old Ryan Babcock used a handgun to shoot the driver under the gas tank, on the driver's side steering wheel, and directly above the driver's side window. Police recovered seven shell casings at the scene.

“I understand keeping a gun to protect your family, but I don't think you should automatically fire just because someone approaches you. I don't think that's right,” Wheeler said.

The suspect told police he thought someone had broken into his car, so he got out and started shooting. Wheeler's car was not marked, but he was wearing a Domino's uniform and carrying a pizza delivery bag.

“I believe that sometimes you have to do what you have to do if you have a good reason. But in those particular cases, I don't think it's a good reason, so I… I don’t agree with that,” Wheeler said.

The delivery driver and his family believe the charge should be attempted murder rather than aggravated assault. Police said the district attorney laid charges.

After his arrest, Babcock was released on bond. His arraignment is scheduled for June 12.
