Gift cards make great gifts, but all too often, many end up forgotten in a drawer. In fact, nearly half of Americans (47%) say they have at least one unused gift card, voucher or store credit, totaling $21 billion nationwide, according to a 2022 CreditCards.com poll.

CNN reported in 2023 that the average amount of unused gift cards was $175. It's a win-win situation for retailers like Target because gift cards pay out instantly.

Target offers gift cards ranging in value from $5 to $500. They can be purchased in Target stores, on the Target website, and at many other retailers, including Kroger, Albertsons, CVS Pharmacy and Walgreens.

Here are four ways you can make the most of your Target gift cards.

Find sales and discounts

To get more value from Target gift cards, pay attention to the timing of seasonal sales, promotions and discounts.

This way, you get more for your money, allowing you to use your gift card to purchase more items.

Use at Starbucks or CVS stores

As Target notes on its website, you can also use the retailer's gift cards at Starbucks locations and CVS pharmacies inside Target stores, as well as Target Optical stores.

Using gift cards at these Target in-store locations gives you more options when it comes to purchasing items because you're not limited to just Target items.

give them gifts

If you don't use Target gift cards at all, you can give them as a gift and make someone happy instead of letting them collect dust in a drawer.

You can give them as birthday or holiday gifts, or even as wedding gifts.

sell or trade them

If you have a Target gift card but don't want to use it at Target, one option is to sell it. You can use sites like CardCash and Raise, which allow you to sell unwanted gift cards. With CardCash, you can even exchange your gift cards for gift cards from other retailers.

CardCash notes on its website that when you sell gift cards, you can get paid by check, automated clearinghouse system, or PayPal.
