About restaurant inspections

This is a snapshot of testing conducted by the Polk County Health Department.

Licensed restaurants undergo unannounced inspections twice a year that focus on food temperature, cooking methods, employee hygiene, dishwashing and sanitizing, and cleanliness of equipment and facilities.

violation: A restaurant's score is out of 100. 5 points will be deducted for a priority violation and 3 points will be deducted for a priority infrastructure violation. If a violation is recorded on consecutive inspections, the demerit points will be doubled.

Scoring: A score of 70 or higher is considered compliant. Restaurants with scores below 70 must be re-inspected within 30 days or face closure or other administrative action. Restaurants have placards at their entrances indicating whether they passed the last inspection.
