Paul Skenes Top Cards and Pre-Rookie Highlights

This didn't take long. Paul Skenes is a major leaguer less than a year after being the first overall pick in the 2023 draft. However, there is already a lot of demand for this flamethrower from collectors. Some of these cards even predate his turn pro by years.

It remains to be seen when the first Paul Skenes rookie card will arrive. Here are some key early releases.

If you're looking for the first Paul Skenes card, you have to go back four years to when he was drafted by the Buccaneers. He is part of the 2019 Leaf Perfect Game Showcase sets, each of which features a base card, autograph, and several parallels. This is where the top high school players gather, making for some very early cardboard appearances, similar to American Baseball releases. It's also a little strange to see a pitcher on the card as a catcher.

For those with a strictly MLB style in their collection, the first fully licensed Paul Skenes card is the 2023 Bowman Draft Baseball. Also included in the set is the 2023 Bowman Chrome draft card. This gives collectors two main cards to chase, each with their own similarities. Bowman Chrome is preferred by many and comes at a higher price point. That said, it's still significantly cheaper than his autograph in the same category.

Once upon a time, before Bowman Chrome, Bowman's Best was the dominant upstart brand. That has changed dramatically over the years, but Bowman's bestiality continues. Still, the brand emphasizes the ink on the cards and MLB uniforms and logos. With prices for top players and draft picks rapidly skyrocketing, prohibitive for many, Bowman's Best offers a more affordable option.

Skenes won the 2023 Bowman Best Award. It follows a lower value pattern and the cap is not that high. But that might not be a bad thing for someone who wants the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft.

We'll have to wait until after Skenes' first game to see his first card as an official major leaguer. But that will likely happen just hours after his 2024 Topps Now Baseball debut. if When it drops, collectors will have 24 hours to purchase one from the card manufacturer's website or from a pre-sale reseller on eBay. This will be an open production, with volumes matching the total ordered.

Also look out for the RC badge. If it appears on the card, the Paul Skenes rookie card will appear in the 2024 product. If marked “Call-Up,” it means the MLBPA has announced that the season is over and Skenes RC (as well as the rest of the season's debuts) will be delayed for 2025.
