Air Canada Aeroplan

Transmission ratio: 1:1
Minimum transfer amount: 1,000
Transfer increment: 1,000
alliance: star alliance

Air Canada has repurchased Aeroplan and implemented a comprehensive program overhaul, making it the new preferred transfer partner for many points and miles enthusiasts. The program's unique rewards chart combines region-based and distance-based styles, creating a hybrid chart that, while a bit confusing, sets Aeroplan apart from other frequent flyer programs. The program also allows you to add a stopover to your one-way redemption for just 5,000 additional points.

Aeroplan is a member of Star Alliance, but also has many non-alliance partners, giving you plenty of mileage redemption options. Some noteworthy redemptions for Aeroplan miles include:

  • Earn 90,000 Aeroplan points when you fly Etihad Airways from New York (JFK) to Abu Dhabi (AUH) in business class
  • Economy class one-way mileage is as low as 6,000 miles on partner flights (United Airlines) with less than 500 miles within the continental United States and Canada.

Air France/KLM Flying Blue

Transmission ratio: 1:1
Minimum transfer amount: 1,000
Transfer increment: 1,000
alliance: SkyTeam

Flying Blue is a frequent flyer program not only for Air France and KLM, but also for Transavia, Air Caledonia and TAROM. While the program no longer publishes rewards charts and often charges hefty fuel surcharges, it still offers solid value, especially when taking advantage of its monthly promotional rewards (up to 50% off on reward redemptions). In addition, there is a 25% discount for children.

Business class award flights between the U.S. and Europe start at 50,000 miles one-way, while economy class round-trip flights to Hawaii start as low as 37,000 miles (excluding promotions).

Avianca Life Miles

Transmission ratio: 1:1
Minimum transfer amount: 1,000
Transfer increment: 1,000
alliance: star alliance

Avianca, a member of Star Alliance, is a South American airline that offers competitively priced award flights, especially when traveling with a partner. The program's incentive pricing is based on predefined regions. Some advantages include short-haul flights within these areas, for example, United Airlines flights within select areas only cost 6,500 LifeMiles.

Award flights from the U.S. to Europe are only 63,000 LifeMiles one-way in business class and 87,000 LifeMiles in international first class, which is a great deal.

British Airways Executive Club

Transmission ratio: 1:1
Minimum transfer amount: 1,000
Transfer increment: 1,000
alliance: a world

IAG member British Airways uses the mileage currency Avios. If the name sounds familiar, that's because it's also the currency of partner airlines Iberia, Aer Lingus and even Qatar Airways. The significance here is that your Avios can be transferred from any of these programs to another. So while British Airways may be the only Avios transfer partner for Capital One miles, technically your miles can be transferred to any operator – you just add one extra step.

That being said, since this article focuses on Capital One's direct transfer partners, we'll highlight some of the best uses for Avios in your British Airways Executive Club account.

British Airways' award charts are distance-based and use peak and off-peak pricing to determine mileage costs. You'll get the best value possible when you use Avios to fly with British Airways' partners, which include all airlines in the Oneworld alliance and a handful of non-alliance partners. Here are some of the best places you can book with Avios:

  • American Airlines offers economy-class flights within the U.S. up to 1,150 miles for just 11,000 Avios and only $5.60 one-way.
  • Economy flights from the US West Coast to Hawaii cost just 16,000 Avios and cost just $5.60 one-way.

Flying Emirates from New York to Dubai requires a minimum of 62,500 Skywards Miles one-way in economy class and 138,000 miles one-way in business class. If you're interested in other routes, Emirates also operates flights from Newark to Athens, Greece, and from JFK to Milan, Italy, for 38,750 miles one-way.

Emirates stands out from most other major airlines in that it is not a member of any airline alliance. However, it has a range of partners and its miles currency, Skywards Miles, can be used to book award flights with any of them.

Singapore Airlines Krisflyer

Transmission ratio: 1:1
Minimum transfer amount: 1,000
Transfer increment: 1,000
alliance: star alliance

Singapore Airlines is known as one of the best airlines in the world and offers many exciting KrisFlyer mile redemption options:

Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles

Transmission ratio: 1:1
Minimum transfer amount: 1,000
Transfer increment: 1,000
alliance: star alliance

Turkish Airlines miles redemption is a bit difficult due to the finicky website and often difficult to contact call center. But given the sheer number of sweet spots in the rewards table, the Miles&Smiles program certainly makes sense. Some of the better redemptions include a 67,500-mile one-way business class award to East Asia and a 45,000-mile award to Europe.

In addition to popular international destinations, Turkish Airlines also offers value for domestic bookings. Its intra-North American awards are particularly attractive, as the price is 7,500 miles one-way in economy class and 12,500 miles one-way in business class. Most importantly, it does not differentiate between the under-48 population and the Alaskan and Hawaiian populations. This means the mileage from Detroit to Washington, D.C. is the same as the mileage from Miami to Kauai.

virgin red

Transmission ratio: 1:1
Minimum transfer amount: 1,000
Transfer increment: 1,000
alliance: SkyTeam

Virgin Atlantic won the award for the “largest single mile redemption” priced in pure cents per mile across any program of any airline in the world on first class bookings with its partner ANA. That’s an exaggeration—but rest assured, it’s well-deserved.

Virgin Atlantic has multiple airline partners, each with their own unique award schedule. Unfortunately, most leave a lot to be desired, and as a result, many people ignore the Virgin program because they simply aren't interested.

Dig a little deeper, however, and savvy points and miles enthusiasts will notice that ANA's one-way pricing for business and first class awards between North America and Japan is well below the industry average. Most airlines charge 75,000 to 95,000 miles for a one-way business class award to Japan and upwards of 110,000 for first class –One Way.By comparison, Virgin Atlantic's ANA Business and First Class mileage redemption award charts only require 90,000 and 145,000 miles round trip 95,000 and 170,000 when departing from the Western United States or from the Eastern or Central United States
