Shanghai issues prepaid travel cards to facilitate inbound tourists


Shanghai has launched the multi-purpose prepaid travel card “Shanghai Pass” to facilitate inbound tourists and other tourists who do not like mobile payments to pay easily.

According to Shanghai City Travel Card Development Co., Ltd., the Shanghai Pass Card has a maximum balance of 1,000 yuan (approximately US$140) and can be used in a variety of scenarios such as public transportation, cultural tourism venues, and shopping malls.

The card can be purchased and stored at major subway stations such as Hongqiao Airport, Pudong Airport and People's Square Station. This card can be used on buses, subways, taxis, ferries, and tourist attractions such as the Shanghai Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Museum, and Shanghai Wildlife Park.

The remaining balance is refundable when the cardholder leaves the city.

The company said they can also use the card to ride public transportation in many other cities, including Beijing, Guangzhou, Xi'an, Qingdao, Chengdu, Sanya and Xiamen.

On May 22, 2024, in the Shanghai Museum gift shop, staff used the Shanghai Tong multi-purpose prepaid card to make payment.

Chinese authorities have taken a series of measures to improve travel convenience for incoming tourists as foreigners who mainly rely on bank cards and cash may face obstacles and challenges in paying with cashless or cardless mobile. Payment is currently the main payment method in China.

According to the Shanghai Municipal Culture and Tourism Bureau, in the first quarter of this year, Shanghai received 1.27 million inbound tourists, an annual increase of 250%, and it is expected to receive about 5 million inbound tourists throughout the year.
