Better together: Why the Citi Strata Premier and Rewards+ cards are a great combination

Citi is TPG's advertising partner.

Some things in life are better in pairs — Citi Strata Premier℠ Card (see rates and fees) and Citi Rewards+® Card (See rates and fees).

While the Citi Strata Premier is a great standalone travel credit card, you should consider adding Citi Rewards+ for another sign-up bonus and more points on everyday purchases.

This also works in reverse. If you already hold Citi Rewards+, add Citi Strata Premier to your wallet to increase your income and make your points more valuable. According to TPG's valuation, CitiThankYou points are worth 1.8 cents per point when you own a Citi Strata Premier. Here's the inside scoop on how the pair works.

Keep in mind that Citi has application limits for its Thank You Rewards Card. Opening or closing a Citi ThankYou Points Earning Card will make you ineligible for the welcome bonus on another ThankYou Points Earning Card for at least 24 months.

If it's been more than 24 months since you applied for a Strata Premier or Rewards+ card, you may be eligible to apply for another card and receive a sign-up bonus.

Improve your exchange

In itself, Citi Rewards+ When you redeem gift cards, they are worth 1 cent each. If you redeem your points at Amazon or Best Buy, they'll be worth even less (we highly recommend not doing this).

However, transferring your points to Citi Strata Premier will open up new redemption possibilities with significantly increased value. The value increases from 1 cent to 1.8 cents (based on TPG valuation) because you now have access to Citi's range of airline and hotel transfer partners, such as Avianca LifeMiles and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club.

Plus, having both cards gives you another way to make your redemptions more valuable: The Citi Rewards+ card offers 10% points back on the first 100,000 points you redeem each year. Reports from online users indicate that if you have a Citi Rewards+ card, you can also get 10% points back when you redeem ThankYou points through a linked card. Both cards must be linked to the same Thank You account for them to work properly.

If you have both cards, you can link your accounts and get the best of both worlds: 10% points back and access to many transfer partners.

Increase your points earning

The next selling point of owning these two cards is their free earn rate.

With Citi Strata Premier, you'll earn 3 points for every $1 you spend:

Earn 10 points per $1 spent on hotel, rental car and attraction reservations and 1 point per $1 spent on other eligible purchases through

this Citi Rewards+ Earn 2 Thank You Points (and then 1 point) per dollar spent on $6,000 in grocery and gas station purchases per year, and 1 point per dollar spent on other eligible purchases. Generally speaking, you should use Citi Strata Premier at supermarkets and gas stations (3 points per dollar versus 2 points per dollar), but there are some notable exceptions. That's because Citi Rewards+ comes with an interesting value proposition: Every purchase you make is automatically rounded to the nearest 10 points.

This means Citi Rewards+ is better suited for smaller purchases (such as a $2 chocolate bar or a pack of gum at a convenience store) or purchases that don't earn bonus points through Citi Strata Premier. The following table explains how this advantage can work to your advantage:
