Walmart ends exclusive store credit cards after customers spent $8.5 billion – but shoppers can still redeem rewards

Walmart and Capital One announce the end of credit card partnership.

Customers can no longer apply for the Capital One Walmart Rewards Card.

Walmart plans to launch a replacement credit card by January 2025, but has not announced which new bank it will use to offer the card.

Potential partners may include major credit card companies Discover, MasterCard and American Express.

A spokesperson previously told The American Sun: “We look forward to offering customers a new credit card option that provides them with meaningful services. benefit Rewards will come soon.

In the meantime, current Capital One Walmart Rewards cardholders can continue to use their cards and earn cash back savings.

The Capital One Walmart Rewards Card is a cash back card that offers up to 5% back on Walmart purchases.


Walmart sued Capital One in April 2023, seeking an early termination of its agreement with the lender.

Walmart claimed the bank failed to meet its customer service obligations.

This includes issuing replacement cards to customers within five days and promptly posting payment and transaction information to customers' accounts.

In March, a judge ruled in favor of Walmart.

The Capital One Walmart Rewards Card is popular with shoppers, and there are $8.5 billion in existing loans in Walmart's credit card portfolio.

Walmart's relationship with the lender began in 2019 after Walmart terminated its credit card deal with Synchrony Financial.

The Walmart Capital One Rewards Credit Card offers cardholders a number of cash back benefits:

Customers can earn 5% cash back on purchases, including pickup and delivery.

Cardholders can earn 2% cash back at Walmart stores, gas stations, restaurants and on travel.

For everything else, the cash back rate is one percent.

Other ways to save

Luckily, shoppers don't need a Walmart credit card to save money at the store.

Customers can use third-party apps like Ibotta to get rebates simply by uploading their receipts.

Meanwhile, the Walmart app showcases many of the best deals and rollbacks currently available.
