Orchid Illustrations, Sondheim Playing Cards, EH Shepard Artwork: Auction Preview


I'll be keeping a close eye on these auctions this week:

The Stephen Sondheim Collection being auctioned by Doyle on Tuesday, June 18, contains some manuscripts and printed materials, but most of the books are sold in large lots. There's some fun game-related stuff here, including a range of printed puzzles, playing cards, board games, and more.

Dominic Winter Auctioneers' sale on Wednesday, June 19, includes travel and natural history, maps and historical engravings, antiquities and music, with a total of 442 lots. Eleven volumes in total Orchid Album (1882-1897) by Benjamin Samuel Williams, priced at £5,000-8,000.

Lyon & Turnbull sold 384 lots of rare books, manuscripts, books and photographs on Wednesday, including first impression copies Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (£40,000-60,000) and a copy of Ian Fleming’s inscribed presentation casino royale (£30,000 to £50,000).

Dominic Winter Auctioneers auctions 493 lots of contemporary literature, private presses, original book art, pop-up books, playing cards and games on Thursday 20 June. Two original illustrations by EH Shepard the wind among the willows Ratty and Mole and The Hour is Come are estimated at £10,000-15,000 each. A set of nine Harry Potter books, with associated letters and all inscribed by the author, could fetch between £8,000 and £12,000.

On Thursday, Swann Gallery will exhibit 320 works of illustration art: featuring selected works from the collection of Jules Feiffer. The cover of Will Eisner's 1940 edition, “The Manly Art of Self-Defense,” inscribed by Eisner for Jules Feiffer, is estimated at $40,000-50,000. Preliminary design illustration by Maurice Sendak Ornn's Beemen It is expected to sell for $16,000 to $20,000.
