Dallas animal shelter needs openings, offers $150 gift cards for large dog adoptions – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Dallas Animal Services is well beyond capacity and is offering $150 gift cards to select adoptions and rescues as they expect to receive hundreds of dogs during the July 4th holiday.

The animal shelter said it currently has 482 dogs sharing 300 kennels and is offering $150 Amazon gift cards to the next 150 dogs weighing more than 40 pounds that find new homes.

“We had a heartbreaking meeting yesterday morning,” said Mary Martin, assistant director of DAS. “We are left with two empty kennels and we expect to receive hundreds of dogs over the coming week as dogs are frightened by the fireworks and run out of the yard.”

The shelter urges all pet owners to make sure their pets are microchipped or at least have an identification tag. During the holidays, shelters recommend making sure pets have a place to feel safe indoors during storms and fireworks, and to never allow animals unsupervised in yards.

“We are proud of our country and look forward to celebrating the progress we have made as a country, but the Fourth of July is not a fun week for animal welfare,” Martin said. “We are going to have an amazing time. It's been an incredibly sad week and we're calling on the community to channel their patriotic energy and use it to help us save lives. If you pick up a big dog this week, you'll be our hero.”

The shelter said those who adopt larger dogs will receive the gift card via email two weeks after the pet is in the home. Rescuers who rescue a dog weighing 40 pounds or more will receive a gift card immediately.

“This is our way of saying thank you for your support and commitment to these animals,” Martin said.
